promo art for sea of stars. it features the main characters valere and zale standing over a wooded landscape. there is a giant eclipse in the backgroud casting the sky in mysterious shades of pink and purple

i need everyone to play 2023 indie game of the year "sea of stars" not just because it's good (and trust me it's Very good) but because it has a minigame called "wheels" that i'm insane about. it's so good. i could play it all day. it's so fucking good.

i made a brief tumblr post about this but this is my personal blog which means you get the extended edition. please enjoy my insane ramblings.

a screenshot of the wheels table in sea of stars. there are four hero figurines on a bronze table with slots and trapdoors. there is a white flag flying above the opponent's crown, and it says 'victory' in the middle of the screen

within the sea of stars universe, the popular 1v1 tavern game "wheels" was invented by a functionally immortal watchmaker. it is played at a specially made table filled with wheels, gears, and figurines that all make the game work. now, the sound design in sea of stars is already wonderful, but this minigame literally makes the nicest sounds of any game ever. being that it's a game made by a watchmaker, it makes these really nice mechanical sounds whenever anything happens and i'm sick about it.

as for the minigame itself, the basic idea is that you and your opponent both have a "crown," which has 10 hit points at the start of the game. the goal is to be the first to bring the opponent's crown to 0. to do this, each player is equipped with two hero figurines, fashioned after classic rpg classes, and five wheels, similar to those in a slot machine. each turn, both players have three spins to match up as many glyphs as they can. they may lock and unlock wheels between spins, and after the third spin, the opponent's wheels are revealed and the glyphs' powers go into effect.

a screenshot of the wheels table in sea of stars. the opponent's wheels are obscured and the player has used one spin and locked the second and third wheel to save two glyphs before spinning again

there are three glyphs in wheels: orange squares, blue rhombuses, and hammers. squares power the hero on the left, rhombuses power the hero on the right, and hammers build up your bulwart, which is a barricade for your crown. glyphs are matched in threes or more, in which three grant one energy and every additional glyph after three grants another (i.e., 3=1, 4=2, 5=3, and so on). sometimes there are double or triple glyphs, so it's possible to spin for three energy on only two—or even just one!—wheels.

hammer energy builds up the bulwark by as many levels as was earned in the spin, with the max level being 5. hero energy pushes down the respective hero's rod by as many notches as was earned in the spin. when the rod is all the way down, that hero may act, and then it goes up again. different heroes have different actions, but we'll get more into that later.

sometimes, hero energy glyphs have a sparkly blue background. these glyphs grant one experience point to its respective hero. experience is also earned at the end of each action. experience points fill up the meter underneath the hero figurine, which is made up of six lights. once all six are lit, the hero figurine levels up and the meter resets. heroes can be bronze, silver, or gold, with each level changing its appearance and improving its action values. when the experience meter is filled on a gold hero, a bomb is summoned upon the opponent's crown and the meter resets again.

screenshots of the three levels of a mage figurine. from left to right they are bronze, silver, and gold, and they become increasingly visually ornate as they get higher level

as for the heroes themselves, there are six in total: warrior, mage, archer, engineer, priest, and assassin. in sea of stars, you start with the warrior and mage, and you unlock the rest by defeating the wheels champions of the venues you come across. each hero has a unique action effect, so the two that you select at the start of a game are based entirely on personal preference and strategy. the warrior sends out a sword for high damage against the crown or bulwark. the mage sends out two fireballs, one at ground level and one above the bulwark, for medium damage. the archer sends out an arrow, which deals high damage to the crown but low damage to the bulwark. the engineer sends out a hammer, which deals high damage to the bulwark but low damage to the crown, and your own bulwark is built up whenever the engineer acts. the priest heals your crown for medium damage and also lowers your other heroes rod, allowing it to act sooner. finally, the assassin attacks the enemy crown directly for low damage and also raises one of the enemy hero's rods, delaying or even cancelling its action.

screenshots of all six wheels hero figurines. from left to right they are warrior, mage, archer, engineer, priest, and assassin

the strategy in wheels is really goddamn fun, especially once you unlock more heroes. you may only have one of a kind on the table, so you have to choose a pair that you find work well for you. there was a champion who ran an assassin and a priest, and that game was a goddamn NIGHTMARE. i had to play four times before earning a tie and once more before actually winning. it was so perfect. because of the order of operations in wheels (spin, experience, energy, action), there were time where i had a rod down ready to act, but then the priest lowered the assassin's rod, so then its action went into effect before mine and my action would literally just not happen. it was PAINFUL but it was so fun to finally plan a strategy and win (i ran a priest and mage). in this scenario, bulwark was completely useless to me because the only attacking hero on the other side bypassed bulwarks, so i was able to focus on hero energy while my opponent had to spend slot spaces on hammers to avoid getting hit by a double fireball. the victory was so sweet.

in sea of stars, beating champions also gets you new wheels, which basically just show off your experience at the game. once you earn the platinum wheel, you can go to the clocktower and challenge the watchmaker herself!

i hope you enjoyed my essay and are maybe considering playing this game. there are a million reasons besides this optional minigame for you to play sea of stars, but this is the part that i'm really obsessed with right now lol i need them to make a standalone spinoff game or a pvp mode (even LOCAL pvp would be fine i just really want to play against friends) JUST for me :]

even though you can't play wheels in the demo, please please PLEASE click the image below the check out sea of stars on steam and play the free demo!! you'll be glad you did :)

hello!!!

my, time sure does fly when you're so busy! let's see if i can recall everything that's ever happened to m :)

SPORTS NEWS: the flyers have thrown it all away. they're cooked. done for. sayonara you poor bastards. it's so over for them. meanwhile, the phillies are running their usual routine of playing mediocre at best during the pre-season and first 40% or so of the regular season. maybe they're find their way into the playoffs once again, or maybe they'll take a page out of the flyers' book and fall apart. either way, i'm currently in misery lol at least there's pwhl minnesota.

GAMEING NEWS: me and zag attempted to play monster hunter: world together, but the online play is so wack it was literally impossible (plus when someone is doing the tutorial section of the game you straight up can't join them on the quests until they beat them for the first time. also the connection kept getting interrupted. it was a little funny). i continue to work through sea of stars. i did not realize how much game i had left but holy SHIT that game is so fucking good literally jaw on the fucking floor and i'm not even at the end yet. fuck. goddamn it. holy shit.

ANIME NEWS: me and smiley still are watching more tv :) we finished kekkai sensen and i liked it a lot! my funny friends are in there, like sonic speed monkey and zed and steven and klaus and zapp and leo and chain and k.k. and like basically everyone else. and now we're watching one of smiley's long time favorites, kiznaiver! it's super cool so far, we're about 2/3 through it :) i really like tenga and nico and maki.

STANLEY NEWS: he's soooooooo cute and soft and warm and he loves me and i love him and i give him 1000 pets and hugs and kisses every day <3 he's on my belly right now as i'm typing this. earlier i took him outside to hold him in the sun so he could feel the rays and smell the smells and see the birds and the leaves and the squirrels and whatnot. he's my sweetest baby boy and he's going to be 14 years old soon!

OTHER NEWS: so i've got this awesome idea for a video game :) it's meant to be a love letter to the late, beautiful mobile game kawaii pet megu (august 12, 2010 - november 28, 2013). for the last week or so i've been coming up with concepts with the marsupials and trying to learn how to write game code faster than anyone should ever do lol but it's slowwwwwwwwlyyyy coming together a bit :) as soon as i figure out how to bend gdscript to my will it's over for all of you. you will not hear about anything except my game. i will drop everything for this shit. probably. assuming i figure out what i'm doing lol if anyone knows about godot please help amen.

that's about all i think! thanks for reading, and i'll see you next time :]

hi! it's been an insanely long time.

i've been so damn busy with all sorts of nonsense but i finally have a little bit of energy and time to update my blog lol so here we go!

sports news: the flyers are dying. badly. send messages of encouragement to save them from their own destruction. the phillies are dying. badly. send messages of violence to blow them up with bombs.

most of my time has been spent working or doing tasks for work, or going places, or doing other things i don't particularly want to do. i haven't played a video game in . a while! it hurts me badly. i got to play a little bit on my switch while traveling a bit but that was like a week ago at this point...

it hasn't all been boring tho :) me and smiley have been watching plenty of tv together. we watched the first season of durarara (apparently the rest is mid so we stopped there lol), then trigun (NOT stampede fuck that show don't show me those soft bitches), then dorehedoro (I NEED SEASON TWO IMMEDIATELY), and now kekkai sensen, all of which is a re-watch for smiley lol and they've all been super fun! i also started reading the dungeon meshi and trigun manga but due to the afformentioned lack of time or energy it's been verrrrryy slow going lol

as for my minimal gaming, the last time i played a game on my computer was... february 23rd. jesus christ. we beat AI: the somnium files: nirvanA Initiative, which was super cool and fun as expected even though it's mid compared to the first game. before that, me and zag beat the final base game boss in monster hunter rise, crimson glow valstrax, which was fucking easy actually. before That, i played some ooblets, which is really cute and fun! i also beat moonglow bay and eastward, FINALLY, although i intend on going back and achievement hunting bc those games fucking rule. additionally, my sister bought me stardew valley on the condition that she would mod it so it's pretty much just fishing, which was pretty fun the one day i played it lol i have to continue that at some point. needless to say, i have a LOT of updates to do on my gameing page. i also have to update the games i'm playing/going to play and list of games that will be getting posts one day. oh AND i want to utilize my new spoilers button i've devised for storytime on my gameing page. prepare for all my posts to get 900x more insane ten thousand years from now. could also be fun to add a section for games i've 100%'d, which might motivate me to actually achievement hunt in the games i said i would haha

speaking of storytime, YES i am still wanting to keep adding to it lol i will probably add pictures of my new favorite stories/characters before i get around to writing about more of them but let the record show that it WILL be finished one day. maybe by the end of this summer? that would be a decent goal i think :)

if you've read this far, CONGRATULATIONS, you have reached the FUN and EXCITING portion of this blog post :] in between all my misery i got to spend a few days with my best friend maebh, and we got up to many awesome activities such as "shopping." it was really mostly shopping. we went to aldi to pick up an amazing item: DINOSAUR COMFORTER AND PILLOWCASE SET for full sized bed, which i cannot for the life of me find a picture of since aldi exploded the page after they sold out lol so click here to view a picture i took of the pattern. we also went to tj maxx where i found my beloved HUGGABLE DINOSAUR WEIGHTED PLUSH which you can look at in this picture here (image from ebay bc i want you to see the packaging). additionally we got some clothes thrifting which weren't as exciting but it was still fun :)

i think that does it for this blog post!! have an awesome variable period between now and the next one :)!

if you follow me on tumblr you may have seen my posts about two awesome language learning apps that are free and very good. regardless, CONGRATS i am going to make the same post here too lol

the first one is MANGO, for people living in the US or Canada. you can use the app/site outside of there, but crucially it is entirely FREE with a US/CA library card! you can check out this page to find a participating public library or university near you.

mango currently has 72 available languages and dialects (that's right! different courses for french or canadian french! spanish or latam spanish!). it's set up basically like an audiobook with text. the idea is that the narrator explains the words while you read, and you repeat after them or say the translation out loud when prompted. there's a daily review where you go through flashcards. you can also use the flashcards at your leisure and create your own. at the end of each chapter there's a listening comprehension quiz and a reading comprehension quiz. i cannot emphasize how effective this all is. and it's free with a card. no ads or funny business.

the second is BUSUU, which i am even MORE partial towards. if you're looking for an app to replace duolingo, this is the one! it only has 14 languages atm but the lessons are really descriptive and effective. it also has a feature where you can correct other people's open-ended speaking/typing exercises. you set your fluent languages, and exercises by people learning those languages will appear in your feed for you to correct. you can even add others as friends! and, much like duolingo, it has a streak and leaderboard system for you to strive for, minus the guilt-tripping owl and funny-money.

like i said, busuu is free! you watch ads to unlock lessons, and they're all skippable after like five seconds. there are also has a paid subscription version, but i don't use it. the language courses are available for free, and the ad system is Really unobtrusive.

i recommend using both apps simultaneously if you can, because they fill different niches! with mango you get pronunciation-focused lessons and color-coded words (it lets you see which part of a phrase corresponds with what in the translated phrase!), while with busuu you get feedback directly from native speakers and incentivised practice! they're both really, really neat programs, and they work even better together!

so yea, definitely check them out :) here are some links for your convenience: MANGO - BUSUU

THE FLYERS ARE KILLING ME BADLY.

two Spongebob screenshots from 'The Bully.' first there is a shot of an elderly fish standing at the bus stop. his head has been replaced with John Tortorella's, and next to him is a cropped screenshot of the NBCSP score showing that the Flyers have an empty net. the second shot is of the blue fish, now wearing a Flyers hat, angrily yelling 'How many times do we have to teach you this lesson, old man?'

for non-hockey people reading this, which i assume is equal to or nearly all of you, here's basically the deal:

on thursday, the philadelphia flyers beat the dallas stars, which was not anticipated at all. they made a really good team look like children, honestly. it fucking ruled. but then everything started to go to shit.

one of their top scorers, owen tippett, injured his lower back at the game on saturday and won't be able to play until at least the second week of february. on tuesday, it was announced that the starting goalie is now on a leave of absence for an ongoing police investigation (not getting into it here), and that right winger bobby brink has been replaced. the flyers lost on saturday, sunday, and tuesday, all in regulation by at least two goals. in all three games, upon realizing they were already losing, tortorella pulled the goalie to give the flyers a one-man advantage (normally you play with 5 skaters and a goalie, but it's common to play with 6 skaters to try and get a goal under dire circumstances). this decision completely ignores the fact that the flyers have been giving up turnovers like their lives depend on it, and like clockwork they gave up empty net goals in all three games. this also shattered the streak that backup goalie sam ersson had going, where he had been keeping opposing teams to less than three goals per game for almost 19 games.

so. ahem.

john tortorella i am speaking directly into your ear right now. you are on the thinnest ice physics has ever managed to allow and it is getting thinner and thinner as i write this. there is no good reason to be pulling the goalies. it is painful to watch. i don't care if someone is begging or paying you to do it. please stop. it sucks so bad. every bone in my body is in excruciating pain. you are hurting me, mr. tortorella. badly. you are hurting the good people of philadelphia. you are hurting your boys and you are hurting the earth. lycksell had better do brink justice or it's so over for you, man. and i hope you are personally feeding medicines and soups to tippett because he's fucking earned it.

sigh.

hi! it's me again :)

so i've linked the storytime page to the rest of the site, and been making decent progress on it! i also went insane after figuring out how to load html from a separate file into a page and decided to change how the entire page functions, but that means it works much nicer on the user and coder end :] i also have plans to do this for other pages, but it's going to take a while to find the time and energy lol

i made a post in the fall asking you all to please send your beams to the philadelphia phillies baseball team. i am now asking you to direct your beams at the philadelphia flyers ice hockey team, as well as some malicious style beams towards head coach john tortorella. explode him with your mind if at all possible please. they've been playing soooooo well but torts has ruined my entire life this weekend (pulled the goalie and gave up an empty net goal on saturday, and did it AGAIN TODAY. BRO).

what else has happened in two weeks... played more eastward and sea of stars. i haven't finished either game yet but i think i'm nearly there! they're both such good gamessss. i also tried to play more melty blood type lumina but my computer doesn't like it. my sister also wants me to play stardew valley so i guess i'm doing that but with mods to make it mostly about fishing lol

i had something i wanted to talk about this morning but i've completely forgotten... we had a good streamiversary! that's a thing that happened! maybe it was that.

anyway, i'm gonna go play monster hunter rise. byeeeeeee!

BEFORE THIS YEAR ENDS.

i will do another blog post :) hehe

2023. what a year, huh? what the hell even happened this year. let me look at what i've posted here... oh! right!

some amazing events of the year include: my two cool roommates found out my secret online identity (this one) because i was liking solradguy posts too quickly (I LIKE HIS PRODUCT, OKAY?), terry bogard saved my life, i started playing many many fighting games and a LOT of monster hunter, i escaped the hell chamber and returned to my rightful place beside stanley, smiley introduced me to anime, the phillies made it to game 7 of the NLCS, the flyers ? started playing well?? and i had a lot of fun :] i think overall the year was a steady positive incline for me! it started out Kinda Bad, got a Little Worse, and then just got better and better babey B) and now i'm doing really well!!

i listened to a lot of awesome music, especially prog, but as usual my "spotify wrapped" was dominated by the music i listen to while sleeping so it didn't really show lol i think what i spent the most time enjoying consciously was haken tho. sound of the century!!

as for video games, my favorite game that came out this year (which i FINALLY purchased but have not started) is sea of stars hands down. it won the indie game of the year award! i'm so so so excited to play it i could throw up. i also purchased a bunch of other games on my wishlist which came out recently, like dave the diver and ooblets! my Personal game of the year (as in the game i spent the most time enjoying this year) is definitely monster hunter rise!! i finally beat the main story of the base game, got my hunter rank up to like 120 or something, and spent a lot of time playing with my lovely friends maebh and zag :] close runners-up would definitely be moonglow bay and eastward, neither of which i've finished yet lol

for streaming, we didn't do much since so many marsupials were busy in the spring and fall with school and whatnot. still, 2023's two-year streamiversary was short and sweet and a lot of fun, and we finished Four games in the summer: phoenix wright ace attorney, psychonauts 2, professor layton and the diabolical box, and hypnospace outlaw :) if i had to pick a favorite stream series it would definitely be ace attorney!! i had so much fun with the first game in the series and i can't WAIT to play more of it! if all goes well there will be another fun streamiversary in january and a whole lot of fun streams coming next summer :]

and now, regarding my hopes for the new year... 2024... the year of the dragon upon us once again...

i wanna do more things! i wanna go to new places near where i live or farther away, i wanna make more art and listen to more music, i wanna write stories and spend a lot of time with the people i care about :) i hope that there are a lot of cool and fun games coming, and i hope the ones i'm anticipating come out soon and are even better than i could have ever imagined (WISHLIST BEASTIEBALL ON STEAM. PLAY THE DEMO. PLEASE.) :)

i hope this year has treated you kindly, dear reader, and i hope we all have a wonderful 2024! happy new year's eve!!

Sunday, December 31, 2023

HELLO!!!!!!!!!!! it's me again :]

i've been kind of Busy recently with many things such as "working a job" and "hanging out." my friends are all still doing college classes so while they're suffering from finals week(s) i have been sitting with them in vc and doing whatever! not very much gaming but me and smiley have been watching more "BLEACH" and i'm enjoying it a lot :)

it's been very long since i created all of the page categories on this website (home, blog, stanley, gaming, music) and i've pretty much always wanted to add another, but i couldn't figure out what. most of what i do and enjoy falls into one of those categories.

THEN i had a beautiful and wonderful realization: i love stories! stories from all sorts of places in all sorts of mediums. i like creating stories, too! so i thought a great idea would be to have a page dedicated to stories, characters, and settings that i reallly like!!

of course, "stories i like" would naturally include video games, but the games i am most sick about already have their own dedicated page lol so there would be no need to cross-post. instead, a "stories" page would be mostly dedicated to things like my own creations, anime i've really enjoyed, other people's original work that you should check out, and stuff of that nature! i would set it up similarly to my gaming page and maybe try to organize between whole stories vs individual elements, my work vs others' vs widespread media, etc. maybe i would have a page for "favorite characters" from whatever with drop down posts telling all the awesome details, and then have posts on the main page for each story. idk! i'll figure it out as i go :)

so !! look forward to that maybe! i have a lot of things i want to put into a page like this, but it will take some time to get up and running and i'm still pretty busy lol so stay tuned :)
